THE LAND OF A THOUSAND CITIES – THE WONDERS OF ANCIENT BACTRIA

THE LAND OF A THOUSAND CITIES – THE WONDERS OF ANCIENT BACTRIA

Situated north of the Hindu Kush and south of the Oxus (Amu Darya) River, the history of the ancient region of Bactria is rich and diverse. From the Oxus Civilisation that flourished in the Bronze Age to the Persian Empire, Alexander the Great, the Greco-Bactrians and the Kushans, some of the key events of the ancient world took place in this fascinating region.

Recently Arcadia Expeditions Co-Founder David Adams was asked by Tristan Hughes from the renowned History Hits podcast to talk about the archaeological wonders of ancient Bactria. Having been fortunate enough to explore many of these sites himself, David discusses the absorbing history and fascinating stories of some of the most extraordinary sites of the ancient world such as the fabled ‘City of Lady Moon’ and the whereabouts of Bactra, considered to be the ‘Mother of All Cities’.

Follow the story of Alexander and the Persians on our expedition to Iran

Arcadia Expeditions now enables clients to explore the whole story of Alexander the Great, the conquest of Persia and the destruction of the Achaemenid Empire. Taking in the iconic highlights of Iran, this tour to Iran first investigates the rise the Achaemenids and their warrior kings Cyrus, Darius and Xerxes – conquerors of much of the ancient world. We then meet Alexander’s army, as they cross from what is today Iraq, to take the ancient city of Susa, and follow in their footsteps through the decisive battle of the Persian Gates and the sacking of the Royal complex at Persepolis.

During our travels, we explore the great cities Alexander spared and those he destroyed, the sites of battle, as well as the great twists and turns of his headlong pursuit of Darius III. In the deserts of southern Iran, we pick-up Alexander and his army as they return from India and search for one of Alexander’s legendary lost cities – Alexandria in Carmania. Along the way we have the thrilling experience of exploring two of the largest circular cities of the ancient world – Gour and Darabgerd.

Throughout this expedition, we are joined by leading Iranian archaeologists and academics, who give us exclusive access to their dig sites and rare insight into this fascinating history. Staying in the finest hotels Iran has to offer, our Iran tour culminates with three nights each in Shiraz and Isfahan for our guests to immerse themselves in the bazaars, food, street life and extraordinary architecture of these fabled cities.
